Artist Information:

Canadian Troy Lovegates aka Derek Mehaffey aka Other began painting on the streets around 1988 after noticing graffiti on the buildings in Toronto that would magically appear overnight. Also around this time he developed a love for rail travel, therefore it was natural for him to begin displaying his art on trains. His rail work became part of a nomadic culture that stretches as far back as the 1800s. Transients, train workers, and soldiers originally developed the tradition of inscribing their names on the trains they used to roam around the country. Many of the tags that remain on trains still in use today, but now new forms of art have been added to the boxcar walls as well. Troy Lovegates’ train work consists mainly of black and white outline portraits with exaggerated facial features. Some of the more complex pieces resemble his street murals which are large-scale, multimedia paste-ups created in his studio and then adhered to outdoor surfaces under the guise of nighttime. His train pieces are influenced by many uncontrollable factors, all of which add to the urgency of the art form. Often times there are people working in the train yards which makes it difficult to focus on one piece for too long.

In order to fund his train work, Troy Lovegates exhibits his art in galleries. To date, he has painted pieces and had art shows in Taipei, Tokyo, Paris, Dublin, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Detroit, Montreal, Toronto, Dublin, Barcelona, Lima and many more cities around the world. His international work has occupied many canvases, from gallery walls to a projection on the side of the Romanian Palace of the Parliament, the largest building in Europe.

In only a few years since Hildebrand has emerged onto the Canadian art scene, he has produced an impressive oeuvre of paintings and drawings, composed of complex spatial environments and nods to historical painting, including trompe l'oeil, romantic landscape painting and surrealism.

Dil Hildebrand received his Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montréal in 2008, won the Royal Bank of Canada Painting competition in 2006, and is now represented by Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain in Montreal. He currently lives and works in Montréal.

This lavishly illustrated book represents the first comprehensive survey of Hildebrand's oeuvre, including works from 2006-present. Featuring an introduction by Richard Rhodes, editor of Canadian Art Magazine, a critical essay by Louise Déry from Galerie de l'UQAM, and an interview with Dil Hildebrand by Christine Redfern.

Dark + Speed a photobook by Ryan Thompson

Dark + Speed a photo/artist book by Ryan ThompsonÔªø.

The book showcases a random selection of double exposure photographs taken by the artist since 1997.

Thompson's photographic process explores a technique similar to collage using traditional film and multiple in camera exposures. Often using found typography and cultural icons the artist creates chance alignments of multiple images. The book has a gritty aesthetic due to the printing method. First photo prints were made from the original film. These prints were then photocopied then scanned in on a Risograph duplicator which created the final output. The book was then collated and perfect-bound by hand.

Anteism @ Montreal Anarchist Book Fair 2010

Anteism will have a new title for sale at this years Anarchist Book Fair in Montréal. Dean Garlick, author of "The Fish" will have a table and will be signing books. The Fish explores currents of contemporary existence in a realm where the brutality of history is ever-present and the will to exist is the only thing keeping a person from fading into nothingness. The book's 17 amazing illustrations by Erik Volet beautifully co-narrate the story.

The journey will include art making along the way and a final exhibition at MOHS Gallery in Denmark. Please support the project if you can. Link at bottom of the page..

Hello travel lovers, bicycle addicts, street art supporters, flickr friends, and on and on... Beginning April 1st I will join the prolific artist Other as he travels from Lisbon, Portugal to his exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark. This trip is complicated by the fact that we are traveling by bicycle and all the work for the exhibition will be made along the way!!!

The project I'm seeking funding for begins April 1 and covers 2000+ miles of travel expenses related to sustenance, survival, and the creation of work. We'll be living as much as possible off the land so your support will go to direct needs like replacing and fixing bike parts, film, art supplies, and postage. Any level of support is greatly supported and those of you helping out will receive goods along the way.

The product of our travels will be the content of an exhibition at the MOHS Gallery in Copenhagen. As the road trip functions as a catalyst for our creative process, I will document the artist’s influence over his environment with his detailed oil bar portraits on abandoned and defunct structures. Simultaneously I will capture the environment's influence over the artist. This documentation will also help to tie many of the loose ends and ambiguity created by Other’s work in the exhibition.

I completed a similar project in 2006 where I bicycled across America to meet a mythic graffiti artist. Entitled Road To Colossus, the film documented my close friend as we bicycled from Reno, NV to Gurdon, Arkansas in hopes of meeting a retired railroad worker, grandfather, and artist extraordinaire. Completing the film gave me the confidence and experience to improve upon my last efforts and excel in this next, challenging endeavor. ( the above video is an excerpt of Road To Colossus)

About the Author: Dean Garlick is an educator and writer living in Montreal. Fantastical permutations of reality abound in his work as a response to his characters' frustrations with the absurdity and struggle of everyday existence, but they have nothing whatsoever to do with his real life. Nothing. He is excited by the possibilities presented by illustrated fiction, especially the potential to explore multiple, non-parallel modes of narrative within a single piece.

The Eyelevel Re-shelving Initiative is an international biennial exhibition of artist books, multiples, and printed matter, refreshing Eyelevel Gallery’s Bookstore collection with works from close to 80 established and emerging artists. This fourth installment offers a chance to peruse and purchase new and unusual works from: Red Fox Press (Ireland), Perro Verlag (Mayne Island, BC), Instant Coffee (Toronto), Islands Fold (Victoria), Valerie Salez (Halifax), Anteism Publishing (Victoria), Garity Chapman (Halifax), Andrew McLaren (Halifax), Adam O’Reilly (Halifax), T.R. Hope For Haiti Poster Project

Print a poster at Olio for The Haiti Poster Project

In an effort to raise $1 000 000 for Doctors Without Borders, the HAITI POSTER PROJECT seek limited edition sets of posters from artists, designers and design firms from around the world to be sold online.

If you’ve yet to make a donation or aren’t able to, Olio will be donating screenprinting equipment, studio time & printing help to any Victoria artists willing to produce a print for the project – PLEASE take advantage of this, as this is a hugely worthwhile project. The project concept is simple – As designers, we have the collective ability to do what we love, AND to create a difference. THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT has been conceived as a collective effort by the design community to unite and effect change through our work.  In order for this project to be successful, we are counting on designer participation.

Commit to having a print ready by March 5th and Olio will donate the studio time, films, screens, printing supplies and shipping costs needed to make it happen.  You need to supply your own paper & ink, though that’s it.

Time is VERY pressing – get in touch with Olio (admin@oliocooperative.ca) ASAP.  This is a very awesome opportunity and you would be foolish to sit it out.

THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT seeks limited edition sets of posters from artists, designers and design firms from around the world. The donated posters will be sold online to raise money for Doctors Without Borders. As designers, we have the collective ability to do what we love, AND to create a difference. THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT has been conceived as a collective effort by the design community to unite and effect change through our work. In order for this project to be successful, we are counting on designer participation. Our goal is to raise at least:

DETAILS:

• DEADLINE: March 15th. Submissions after March 15th will also be accepted, but given the timeliness of the situation, we strongly encourage designers to meet this deadline.
• Posters should be specific to the earthquake in Haiti or THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT.
• The posters may be graphic or typographic.
• The posters should be signed and numbered editions in quantities of 25 to 100. The posters should not be one-offs.
• Minimum size is 11‚Äù x 17‚Äù. (Ideal size: 18‚Äù x 24‚Äù.) Poster can be produced by litho, digital or silk-screen print.
• Posters may include credits for vendors who have donated supplies or services, but please keep them small and unobtrusive.
• Artists will be responsible for designing, printing, and delivering the posters to HAITI POSTER PROJECT. Although we would like to print them, we don‚Äôt have the resources to coordinate all of the printing ourselves.
• We encourage international submissions.
• All submissions will become property of THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT, and will be sold to raise funds for the Doctors Without Borders earthquake disaster relief effort. Several posters from each donated set will be retained for possible future exhibition or publication.
• When you‚Äôve finished your design, please email a PDF or JPEG of finished poster for the site to: info@thehaitiposterproject.com (At least 380px x 480px, please.) Please also include the title of the poster, your name (as you‚Äôd like it to appear) and a short paragraph about you and your poster.
• The March 15th deadline is flexible. With the Hurricane Poster Project in 2005, we were receiving posters six months after the deadline. Please be prompt. More importantly ‚Äî Please participate.
• The Haiti Poster Project is not a juried show. All submissions will be posted, provided they are specific to Haiti or the Haiti Poster Project. The end goal: Raise money for earthquake victims in Haiti. If you design a poster, we will include it in the project. The Hurricane Poster Project had 185 famous and not-so-famous contributors, but the end result was a beautiful cross-section of the design community as a whole.

LEIF STEINER is the founder and creative director of Moxie Sozo, a nationally-known design and advertising agency located in Boulder, Colorado. In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Moxie Sozo organized the HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT, a collaboration of artists and designers from around the world to help raise money for the victims. Over 180 different limited-edition series of posters were produced, raising about $50,000. Many of the posters won major design awards, and the effort was profiled in numerous publications. Exhibitions of the show appeared around the country and in Europe. Additionally, many of the posters are now in permanent collections of several major museums, including the Library of Congress and the Louvre.

JOSH HIGGINS is a creative director in San Diego CA, and the organizer of the 2007 SO-CAL FIRE POSTER PROJECT. After seeing wildfires burn through Southern California in the fall of 2007, Josh enlisted designers and artists around the globe to help. Higgins, who was a contributing artist to the post-Katrina Hurricane Poster Project, founded the So-Cal Fire Poster Project to raise money for victims in southern California. Several of the projects posters have won design awards from Communication Arts, HOW, Print and Step Magazine. The Project was also featured on NBC, FOX, Metropolis Magazine, Communication Arts and California Home and Style. To date the project has raised thousands of dollars and continues to be a relief fund source for fire victims 2 and a half years later.

Whether it’s a man with branches growing out of his head that need pruning, or a pipe that’s trying to quit smoking, his characters are simply, sparsely drawn, yet speak volumes with just a few strokes of the pen. He's been drawing since he was tiny. He's not tiny anymore, but he's not exactly big either. Marc is not sure why he's talking about himself in the third person...

I generally aim to say as much as possible with as few elements as possible. My work often leans toward humour. Finding the humour in things often leads to finding the truth. I like to create absurd situations, by combining things together that don’t belong, or imagine what inanimate objects would say if they could speak. For instance, the pen I am using to write this draft would probably say: "I'm tired. Can we stop for a bit?" Or perhaps it would say: "I can't believe you're making me write this. This is rubbish. Signing cheques would be more inspiring than this." These are the things I think about. I think about a lot of things. I think about thinking. Don't try it though, it's not worth it.

I use watercolours in ways you shouldn't. I make my own sketchbooks. If I smoked, I'd roll my own. I'd rather draw than rent a movie. Don't try to start a conversation with me about recent films. I haven't seen any. I play the guitar. If I was a hobo, I'd learn to play the ukulele, because you could fit one in your duffle bag. My artwork and the materials I use are quite compact. You could fit my studio in a large suitcase."

MADEINVIC Photography Project

MADEINVIC 100 Cameras Photography Project

madeinvic.ca is dedicated to documenting the people in Victoria who make things in Victoria.

Ever wondered what the world looks like through someone else's eyes? Us too. So we're asking 100 Victorian to show us what they see when they look at our city. Madeinvic.ca, in partnership with Street Level Espresso, is handing out 100 disposable film cameras and asking "What does made in Victoria mean to you?"

The cameras are available at Street Level Espresso February 5th starting at noon. On the camera you'll find a number on the bottom and place for your email address on the back. Each participant will have 27 frames to interpret and photograph what "Made in Victoria" means to them. When the cameras are full they can be dropped back at Street Level Espresso. After the cameras are returned, the photos will be processed and posted here. Photos will be sorted by the number on each camera and participants will have the opportunity to comment on their photos after they are posted online. There are 100 cameras available on a first-come, first-served basis with a limit of 1 camera per person. We are encouraging everyone draw and colour on the cameras label, just be sure to leave room for your email address on them too. Please return your camera by the end of February, the sooner we get them back, the sooner we can post them.

1. First things first, get your camera from Street Level Espresso. While you're there don't forget to get a coffee too.
2. Start taking photos. We're asking you to interpret and photograph "Made in Victoria".
3. Keep taking photos until there is no room left on the camera.
4. Now that your camera is full, bring it back to Street Level Espresso.

After the cameras are returned they will be processed and the photos will be posted here on madeinvic.ca. Each camera has a number on the bottom and the photos will be posted in galleries by camera number. Write your email address on the camera (theres a space on the back), if you do, we will get in touch a couple days before the photos are posted. Once they are online you'll have the opportunity to write something about your photos.

The cameras have a white label, while we love a minimal design and lots of whitespace that isn't why the cameras are white. We choose to have a plain white label on all of our cameras so that you can draw, colour, sign, tag, paint, and personalize your camera how ever you would like. If you choose to colour your camera the label will be saved, photographed and posted with your photos.

We’re defining “Things” in this statement as:

IMYGRATE Artist Profile: Luke Ramsey

Artwork, zines, art residency and new solo show entitle PrETTY PROBLEMS.

Luke Ramsey of Islands Fold has been a huge contributor and supporter of Anteism since day one. His artwork, zines and artist residency has played a vital role in an art scene based around drawing and good people. Luke has a character in the IMYGRATE show, which ended it's trip in Revelstoke, British Columbia. Visit the IMYGRATE Exhibition on February 19th to see the artwork of Luke Ramsey and 103 other International artists.

I'm also very excited about a solo exhibition Luke is having at El Kartel in Vancouver on February 6th, 2010. The show is entitled Pretty Problems.

There are also a number of other great art events happening around Vancouver during the Olympics, such as Monster at the West Vancouver Museum which will showcase the artwork of  Marcel Dzama, Shary Boyle and Howie Tsui among others. Another great exhibition / project is "Here is Now". HERE IS NOW  is a series of “pop-up” exhibitions that features the work of contemporary Vancouver artists shown within the unconventional space. The intention of Here Is Now is to view the exhibits themselves as an overall installation, through the exploration of time and space, creating an aesthetic that varies in participation, duration and negotiates and reconfigures the use of the unconventional space. Through this approach we wish to create a movement that focuses on what Is Here Now.

IMYGRATE Artist Profile: Charlotte Cynthia Walton

Charlotte Cynthia Walton

Victoria artist Charlotte Cynthia Walton has been an important contributor to Anteism projects and publications since day one. Charlotte's work spans multiple mediums from paper cut-outs, 3 dimensional paper sculpture, drawing and painting. Her work combines classical photo realist drawings, abstract decorations and simplified anime-like illustrations.

Charlotte has contributed two characters to the IMYGRATE Project. Join us for the exhibition launch on February 19th, 2010.
