Other - Stolen Land + Upcoming Book!

"Other" Artist - Aka. Troy Lovegates

Wander-lust ridden graffiti artist, Other, has scrawled, spray-painted, and pasted his beautiful, highly detailed, and often solemn-faced characters on the walls and doorways of buildings around the world. His work has mysteriously appeared in such distant places (far from his native Canada), as, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Bucharest, Fez, and Lima, Peru. However, it is on the elusive freight trains of the extensive North American railroad system that the majority of his imagery is on display. It is a rare treat to have a large collection of the artist’s work assembled in one location.

Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography

Save the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography

The Canadian Federal Government has announced that the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography building at 1 Rideau Canal in Ottawa will be taken over by Parliament for office space and meeting rooms. The CMCP is the only museum in Canada devoted to the photographic image. It was created in 1985 after intense lobbying by the photographic community and opened its $16M state-of-the-art facility in 1992. We are firmly opposed to this arbitrary decision, delivered by the Government and National Gallery without warning or consultation. This is not just a photographic community concern. The loss of this public art space concerns us all.

To join the fight to save the CMCP, please take a moment to sign the petition:

www.ipetitions.com/petition/CMCP/

For background information on this announcement, please visit:

www.savecmcp.ca/ Please circulate this petition through your network with apologies for cross-posting.

Michel Campeau: "It is imperative that the CMCP be returned to its former status among international institutions dedicated to photography. The building that was designed for the CMCP when it was founded must house it once again. To accomplish its mission, it is urgent that a francophone curator be hired to fill a vacant post. An increase in the budget is also needed for the CMCP to maintain its operations, acquisitions, and influence."

Donigan Cumming: "The loss of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography has sparked a national effort to stop this government's systematic erasure of Canada's cultural heritage. As established Canadian creators, we need to send a strong message to Ottawa. The CMCP was created by artists coming together and making their views known. We can do this again. We owe it to the next generation."

Vera Frenkel: "The Harper government's appropriation of CMCP premises for routine office use follows on its grab for party receptions of a beautifully renovated building designated for the Portrait Gallery of Canada. Colonizing cherished and hard-earned cultural resources for bureaucratic bumph on the one hand and private parties on the other signals that the fog is rolling in. What is it that these jokers don't understand about this sentence: 'Canada's most powerful ambassadors are its artists.' Or this: 'Every citizen is entitled to experience Canada's visual history.' The collections of the CMCP and the Portrait Gallery are being hidden from view; a criminal deprivation, in my opinion, of a citizen's right to know who we are through the inspiring work of our great artists, many of whom are internationally admired photographers. This extraordinary double blunder is already embarrassing Canada elsewhere and together with other foolishly destructive decisions will cost this government the next election."

www.ipetitions.com/petition/CMCP/

Paul Smith TypeWriter Art - One finger at a time.

Paul Smith, a man with an extraordinary talent was born in Philadelphia on September 21, 1921 with severe cerebral palsy. Not only had Paul beaten the odds of a life with spastic cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his speech & mobility but also taught himself to become a master artist as well as a terrific chess player even after being devoid of a formal education as a child.

Unable to hold a pencil or paintbrush Paul turned to the typewriter to create his portraits and Americana based artworks. Using different keys on the typewriter to form different shapes which were layered to produce an image. 'When typing, Paul used his left hand to steady his right one. Since he couldn't press two keys at the same time, he almost always locked the shift key down and made his pictures using the symbols at the top of the number keys. In other words, his pictures were based on these characters .... @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ . Across seven decades, Paul created hundreds of pictures. He often gave the originals away. Sometimes, but not always, he kept or received a copy for his own records. As his mastery of the typewriter grew, he developed techniques to create shadings, colors, and textures that made his work resemble pencil or charcoal drawings.'

This great man passed away on June 25, 2007, but left behind a collection of his amazing artwork that will be an inspiration for many. View a gallery of Paul Smiths typewriter artworks here & a time lapse gallery showing the stages of an artwork come to form.

We could all learn something from Smith's dedication, perseverance and positive outlook.

What's BOKAY?
Bokay (Bokeh from the Japanese boke ぼけ, “blur”) is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens.

The Bokay PhotoGiving Project aims to focus on photographers and their work while allowing the opportunity to share the artwork with our peers. It’s easy to overlook photography as a fine art. We are inundated with photographic images daily through advertisement and other media. Photos are so common we may overlook and neglect their importance as art. This project strives to showcase photography as a Fine Art and to help give some white space around the work of talented photographers.

How Does The Project Work?

Here’s how the project works:

Anteism scours the earth for impressive and inspirational photography. We highlight the work of one of these photographers. The photographer's artwork is displayed on the Anteism website along with an interview and a limited number of prints for sale. The prints will be limited to an edition of 25. These prints can be purchased for yourself or sent as a BOKAY to anyone. Think of the BOKAY like a traditional Bokay of flowers. It's sent to a loved one, a friend or anyone you would like to thank. We will personalize the certificate and mail the photo BOKAY off to your recipient. The BOKAY contains an 8√ó10 photo print of your chosen photo + an ornate numbered certificate. These certificates state who has sent the print along with a description about the project and edition information. Example of a BOKAY certificate.

"Spread Eagle"- Rats with wings. Shit hawks. Angels.

Spread Eagle is a photo series about the common seagull. A romantic look at the flight of the seagull in between gorging. After reading Richard Bach's best-selling book "Jonathon Livingston Seagull" photographer Ryan Thompson wanted to capture the potential and character of the average seagull. Livingston wrote "For most gulls, it's not flying that matters, but eating." It's this potential of doing great things to accomplish the mundane that Thompson finds most interesting. He believes that Seagulls gained the ability to fly because of their burning desire for food. They may not recognize all they have accomplished because of their never ending hunger.

Aaron Noble - Rebuilding a Super Heroe

Aaron Noble's paintings look like super heroes deflating like a balloon and zig-zagging across the universe. Aaaron uses images found in 90's comics (most notably published by IMAGE). Theses abstracts are instantly recognizable as comic like to some, but comic readers will see the image as a mashup of characters. These characters have been brilliantly transformed to erase the branding and identity that has been painstakingly designed into the series.

Aaron Noble

Jeff Koons | Easyfun-Ethereal

Nobles's paintings brought to mind Jeff Koons series EasyFun-Ethereal although much more abstract. Koons does not abstract his imagery as much as crop and collage but it is the use of certain parts to create the new which is similar. Whether we've eaten a"Pop Tart" or not our generation will identitfy and the same goes for comics. These super human characters seem to have lost their extraordinary powers due to the lack of human muscle structure, but gained god like status.
