The Vancouver Art Book Fair - VA/BF

Anteism will be at the second annual Vancouver Art/Book Fair, a two-day festival that features nearly one hundred local, national and international publishers of art books, magazines, zines, printed ephemera and digital or other experimental forms of publication, as well as on-site programs, performances and installations. 

Free and open to the public, VA/BF is the only international art book fair in Canada and one of only two on the West Coast. 

Launching with a Reception at Project Space at 8pm on Friday, October 4, 2013, VA/BF will take place from 12pm to 5pm on October 5 and 6 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

We are so happy to see this event happening in Vancouver. It filled a huge void on the West Coast. Come witness the early stages of an already blossoming world class art book fair. The first 250 people each day get a free tote bag! Come early. 

The Many Faces of Koyama Press

I was first introduced to Koyama Press through the comic book Lose #1 by Michael Deforge at the TCAF Festival in (2009? if memory serves...). It stood out from all the other professionally published comics I had seen, and opened up my eyes to a whole new world of indie comics - which I thought I knew . It was the art I loved, put into the format of a comic. Over the years I would find myself picking up art books and comics that drew my attention and noticed that they had been published by, or thanks to, Koyama Press. I felt similarities in Anteism's publishing platform to produce the work of emerging artists . After talking to many people who had worked with Annie Koyama and reading the thank-you's from the artists in the books I realized the work she was producing was much more than the sum of its parts. 

Lose #1 by Michael Deforge

Skip ahead a few years. Out of frustration for lack of venues to show art/books and simultaneously layed off of work and evicted from my home/studio, I decided to make the leap and follow through with an idea that I had for well over a decade. An idea introduced to me by a good friend Luke Ramsey who had submitted his zine to a mobile book library all those years ago.

It just so happened that I had six months of Employment Insurance and the good fortune of making an arrangement with a friend to donate a cube van. Over the course of this time the OuterSpace Mobile Gallery took shape, all the while ideas for shows and publications took form. 

One idea that felt important was to provide a venue (gallery format) to publishers. To exhibit a publishers books all together as a whole and to allow the viewers to experience the timeline and vision of a publishers endeavours. It allows the viewer to get an aesthetic understanding of the publishers tastes and would help to showcase links to artists often working in loose collectives. From zines to coffee table books, comics to photography this could be a focused art book fair, one publisher at a time.

It seemed fitting to send the initial exhibition invitation to Annie Koyama. It has been a great pleasure to put this show together, to witness the amazing work she has produced over the years for a new generation of emerging artists. As the rain and wind pummels Victoria I look forward to rolling open the truck door and sharing this work with the people out braving the elements over this weekend.

Black is Beautiful - 231 Markers by Allister Lee

Allister Lee illustrating his massive collection of black markers.

Allister Lee is a commercial designer and artist who specializes in the creation of graphic collateral for premier apparel brands and retail operations. 

His exhaustive series Black Is Beautiful is a visual database of black markers that he has acquired over the past decade. Featuring clean photography and simple descriptive text, the database will is updated with 9 new MARKERS each week. At the time of writing there are a total 231 markers shown in the collection.

Alex Shubert of The Zine Police

Alex Shubert is an illustrator and comic artist residing in Kansas City. His work has been featured on MTV, Vice, Juxtapoz and It's Nice That.  We'll be showing his risograph prints and more during The Many Faces of Koyama exhibition in OuterSpace Gallery, September 27th-29.

Luke Ramsey - Pulling Back The Layers

Luke Ramsey's amazing recent exhibition at Madrona Gallery highlighted a new body of work which displayed finely crafted, intricate freehand ink drawings. We are excited to be showing a new experimental piece which incorporates collage and the peeling back of layers of a sketchbook cover. Tin Can Forest - Folklore from the Dark Forest

Tin Can Forest - Art Print

Pat Shewchuk and Marek Colek are Canadian artists based in Toronto, Ontario, who work collaboratively under the name Tin Can Forest. Together they produce art, film and books. They find inspiration in the the forests of Canada and Slavic art and folklore.

At present, Tin Can Forest  can be found on a forested mountaintop on Salt Spring Island BC, carefully dodging the bears and cougars as they find inspiration amongst the giant cedars.

OuterSpace will be exhibiting some beautiful prints and books by Tin Can Forest during "The Many Faces of Koyama" exhibition.

Jesse Jacobs - One Million Mouths

The second artist exhibiting during "The Many Faces of Koyama Exhibition" is Jesse Jacobs - Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, and now draws comics and things from his home in London, Ontario. In 2009, his books Small Victories and Blue Winter were short listed at the Doug Wright Awards for Canadian Cartooning. He received the Gene Day Award for Canadian Comic Book Self-Publisher of 2008. His work has been exhibited in galleries across Canada.

Jesse's major publishing debut after several award-winning, self-published titles—describes his new comic work, By This Shall You Know Him, as coming “out of the darkness of oblivion.” Within the book’s confines, Jacobs states that the reader will “bear witness to the limitless ambitions of a gang of celestial beings as they fiddle and fuss with all sorts of molecular arrangements, creating infinitely detailed patterns and strange new worlds brimming with bizarre life forms. Part art-book, part graphic novel, By This Shall You Know Him depicts all manner of beast running, crawling and slithering towards death’s cold embrace.”

The Many Face of Koyama Press

OuterSpace Gallery is pleased to host "The Many Faces of Koyama Press" the first in an ongoing series of publisher spotlight exhibitions at Outerspace Gallery. We wish to provide arts publishers a platform to show their various publications side by side, to truly allow the viewer an understanding of the publishers vision. 

We will be exhibiting the near complete catalog of publications produced by the crucial Canadian comics and art publisher Koyama Press. 

We will also be exhibiting the artwork of six artists who have been published by Koyama Press - Patrick Kyle, Jesse Jacobs, Luke Ramsey, Tin Can Forest, Alex Schubert and Allister Lee .

This exhibition is for everyone who enjoys art, comics/graphic novels and books in general. 

The exhibition will take place during Culture Days at Centennial Square in Victoria, BC.

James Kirkpatrick - Blue Lineage Edition

The Blue Lineage has begun.

We are excited to release the first book in a new series called Lineage. The Lineage book series showcases artists in their work and daily environment. The photographic heavy publication will shed light on the artists process and way of life while producing a body of work. Utilizing snapshots, sketches, and snippets all mixed in with artworks in process.  Once a book is complete, the artist then chooses the next artist in the series.

We have chosen James Kirkpatrick as the first artist in the Lineage series. Over the years we have had the pleasure of working with Kirkpatrick and have published a book and multiple zines  ( Brain Trust and A Dog Named Dracula ). His experimental works in sculpture and circuit bending are the vein which connects the two vital organs in his creative endeavours, art and music. We are very happy to share a glimpse into the process of Kirkpatrick's life + work. View the Book.

Brand New Website & Mobile Gallery

We've been very busy working on a couple of new projects. In fact we had to build a new website to combine everything into one platform.

We're excited to announce a new mobile art gallery called OuterSpace. OuterSpace will be an extension of our publishing platform, allowing us to have book launches, exhibitions and pop-up shops on the West Coast. For our first exhibition we selected the multifaceted artist James Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick produced an exhibition of paintings, a circuit bent electronic instrument and painted a mural on the side of the OuterSpace truck. View the artwork from the exhibition.

A second project that is now coming together is an artbook series entitled "Lineage Editions". We showcased a prototype of our first publication at the opening of Kirkpatrick's exhibition. 

James Kirkpatrick's Blue Lineage Edition

The goal of the Lineage book series is to showcase artists in their work and daily environment. The photographic heavy publication will shed light on the artists process and way of life while producing a body of work. Utilizing snapshots, sketches, and snippets all mixed in with artworks in process. 

Four artists are chosen to begin the series. Each artist is designated a colour (blue, green, red or yellow). These colours become a lineage throughout the series. Once the book has been completed the published artist then selects the next artist who's work will be showcased in the following book. This book will fall under the same lineage or colour as the previous artist.

 This series is hand-bound with a die-cut cover and limited to an edition of 50. Available in our online shop very soon.

Portrait of a Generation

An artist yearbook for New York City in 2012

This book was from the exhibition “Portrait of a Generation” (June 7 - August 10, 2012) where over 100 artists who make up the art scene made portraits of each other to give image to a community of people. The works were hung salon style on our gallery walls, and include painted, drawn and photographic portraits. Available at The Hole

André Saraiva's Andrepolis

André Saraiva's new art book available through The Hole Gallery Shop.

This book was from the first major solo show by André Saraiva “Andrépolis” (June 7 – August 10, 2012) where, as the title suggests, the artist will be making a miniature city installation in Gallery 3. Building fifteen wooden, painted, and fully lighted buildings, the rear gallery will be transformed into a city at night, with miniature neons lighting up his recreations of a hallucinatory vision of New York nightclubs and restaurants. His arted version of the city will create the scene for which artists and culture makers come together, while the sister show in Gallery 1 and 2 features portraits of over 100 of the artists that make up the art scene here.

This exhibition, Andrépolis, is not only the most important exhibition that André has ever done in the United States, it is in fact the ultimate realization of his vision and of his artistic universe.

The exhibition is an installation of fifteen monumental sculptures, forming an urban landscape composed of stylized New York skyscrapers. It evokes giant toys, a theme park, or perhaps miniature maquettes of nightclubs with their ever so discreet, well-guarded doors, their nocturnal, informational neons … Once again André is creating clubs, but this time they aren’t in a city, they’re in a gallery. With this good-natured gesture, he reminds everyone that if he did contribute to the night scene with his clubs— which he continues to do — it is as an artist, and without ever giving up his vocation, which renders clear everything he does.

The urban phantasmagoria of Andrépolis is indeed child-like, but it is also as eroticized as the streets of Pigalle and as idealized as a drawing in a metaphysical comic book, linking Paris and New York, André’s two favorite cities. The one from which he came and the one where he met the woman he loves.Andrépolis is also a link between the world of children (building games, comic books) and the art world (the artist graffiti he came from, the city according to Matt Mullican or the work of Mike Kelley). This is his strength, being able to pass from one world to another, from the world of children’s games to the contemporary arts scene. And to be able to connect so easily to everyone, children, adolescents, the art world; only a few artists who came out of graffiti have succeeded this way. I think Keith Haring, one of his heroes, incredibly creative, generous, embodying the accessibility of contemporary art, the artist connecting with people in the street – and we must add Little Nemo …

This exhibition synthesizes André’s artistic journey and his daily obsessions: the graffiti of Mr. A, drawn wherever he goes, love graffiti for each new love, and Mickey with his erection (“I have a Mickey Mouse/ a real club in his house. And if you shake him he goes off…” as Serge Gainsbourg used to sing, rather more pornographically in French), which André remade for the occasion, the silver exhibition. Ironically, these sculptures of nightclubs also link to his activity as a creator of clubs. Each of these sculptures is an altar to the passions in his life: partying, the night, and the irresistible attraction of the lights in the bars and the clubs of the city he is exploring.

And the exhibition has a surprise at the end, a carousel for adults, for those who are not afraid to ride the wings of desire… the way André does in Andrépolis.

The Paintings of Hiro Kurata

Kurata's paintings translate his thoughts and experiences of growing up in America

Art4d.Asia has posted some new paintings by Hiro Kurata. Hiro has recently produced a beautiful series of paintings for his show "Home Field Disadvantage" at MotusFort Tokyo.

“As I was walking a ribbon of highway, I saw above me an endless skyway. I saw below me a golden valley. This land was made for you and me,” This Land Is Your Land, Woody Guthrie (1940). Hiro Kurata's recent series of paintings, “This Land Was Your Land,” reference the popular Woody Guthrie song in title and notions of self-identity amplified by living on foreign shores in imagery. Kurata, a Japanese born artist currently living and working in New York City, described that, for him, the song “was supposed to be a song about appreciating America, but as I started to grow up I realized that the land really belonged to someone else, rather than people there now...some things used to belong to someone, and now it belongs to someone else, and in the future it will be owned by another someone. Nothing will stay the same, it is all temporary, and therefore makes it precious.” The final stanza of Guthrie's lyrical take on America mirror Kurata's hesitations, stating “In the squares of the city, in the shadow of the steeple, near the relief office - I see my people, and some are grumblin', and some are wonderin', if this land's still made for you and me.” Read More @ Art4d.Asia

Andrepolis Art Book by André Saraiva

Anteism's pleased to announce the release of Andre Saraiva's Andrepolis exhibition catalog for The Hole.

We had the pleasure of working with The Hole and Andre Saraiva on an art book for his exhibition Andrepolis. This hardcover book highlights Saraiva's drawings, neon lit nightclub sculptures as well as a one tonne bronze Mickey Mouse sporting erect penis.

The book has texts by Olivier Zham and Glen O'Brien as well as guest appearances by Milla Jovovich + Kembra Pfhaler.

Giverny - Kembra Pfhaler & EV Day Art Book

Giverny is an exhibition catalog for Kembra Pfhaler and E.V. Day's exhibition at the Hole, NYC.

This limited edition catalog showcases the duo's photo series created in the famous Giverny Gardens in northern France (best known as the location of Claude Monet's garden and home).
