Ruins in Process - Vancouver Art in the 60's

ruins-in-process

Ruins In Process is a research archive and educational resource that brings together still and moving images, ephemera, essays and interviews to explore the diverse artistic practices of Vancouver art in the 1960s and early 1970s. Drawn from private collections and archives as well as public sources, it uses the capacity of the internet as an ideal medium to present the interdisciplinary activities and technologies that emerged at that time. With hundreds of images, texts, audio and video recordings, Ruins In Process will reward repeat visits and ongoing research. Read More.

The site is really nicely designed but a bit of a pain to browse. It's navigation is awkward but it's worth sifting through. The first thing I dove into were the books and prints here are some samples from the print section.

Woodpile Collective - The Mend is Very Near.

Boucherat Gallery has created a great video of the Woodpile Collective's most recent exhibition "Knew". The video includes an interview with the crew's Sean McLaughlin, Blythe Hailey, and Shawn O'Keefe. The show included an amazing module art shack, made from found materials, screen prints, West Coast aboriginal influenced wooden masks and Woodpile's well known large collaborative paintings. Traditionally trained sign painters Chris and Stu Dobell contributed some amazing hand painted signage, while Darren Heise set the mood with a funny but sometimes spooky animation which played in the background on a big old wood framed T.V. Us Ones In Between Exhibition Catalog

Us Ones In Between Exhibition Catalog Us Ones In Between is a catalog published by Open Space Gallery and Anteism that coincides with the exhibition of the same name. Us Ones In Between recognizes eight prolific artists from Victoria, British Columbia who look for little or no critique from an audience outside their trusted peer group. They create works from drawing, paintings and sculpture to embroidery, assemblage and video.

Us Ones In Between Book - Caitlin Gallupe Page Spread

The goal of the exhibition is to take the artwork from these artists homes and place it in a larger arena. The Us Ones In Between catalog showcases the graphic colourful pattern paintings by Cam Kidd, the fine lined drawings and collage by Ty Danylchuck, the psychedelic landscapes of Caitlin Gallupe, the fluid dream like illustrations of Erik Volet, Cody Haight's intricate repeating kaleidoscoping patterns, Eden Veudry's original abstract crochet and video works, the worn wood collaged installations of Liam Hanna-Loyd and the smooth 8bit paintings of Brooke Semple.

Drawings by Peter Thompson

Peter Thompson has some great original drawings for sale on his flickr account. During the month of August Peter will be donating half of the money from the sales of his drawings to help out Yale St & A Horse and His Boy (two bands that got their music gear ripped off along with 3 years worth of samples)http://www.myspace.com/openhouseartscollective http://www.myspace.com/ahahb

Excerpt from LondonFuse.ca Peter Thompson is one of the most fascinating artists to emerge from the depths of London's art scene. Each of his 50 Dollar drawings comprise his trademark cartoonish lines which outline everything from retro hot rods to strange, ghost-like characters. The swervy lines almost fall off the page like a slinky down a set of stairs. I'm always dumbfounded by the bounty of imaginary characters Thompson draws but also by his unselfconscious, decontextualized social commentary. If it were not for the blunt, sometimes inviting, sometimes forbidding phrases-  like "don't worry, you won't get hurt",  taken sometimes from pop culture, sometimes from an unknown origin - the sheer schizophrenia of the various complex elements intermingling on a page might put people off the way highbrow art often does.

Peter's artwork can also be seen in Brain Trust a book of collaborative drawings and paintings created with James Kirkpatrick.

Islands Fold ScreenPrints @ Olio

I had the awesome experience working with Islands Folder Luke Ramsey and Joey from Olio Co-operative ( an amazing co-op screen printing studio here in Victoria ) to produce a couple of zines and a print. These were some of Luke's first prints which he produced by himself. They turned out awesome! You can purchase the zines/print through Islands Fold. If you are interested in learning to screen print on flatstock (paper) or t-shirts get ahold of Joey through the Olio website or me through our website. Screenprinting can be a very frustrating process, working out of an apartment with basic equipment. Olio has a beautiful work space with awesome equipment and is a great opportunity to get you started printing.

The Lions - Art Group

The Lions - Art Group - Vancouver

The Lions are a group of Vancouver artists that work together on drawings and paintings. The lineup of Tasha Brotherton, Matthew Brown, Barry Doupe, Collin Johanson and James Whitman form a really cohesive group, so cohesive that I'm not quite sure if they collaborate on the drawings or just work side by side. It's easy to form a link to Winnepeg's Royal Art Lodge but more so in the idea of a group of artists working together. Although the Lions do have a number of paintings the majority of the work is pen and ink and with a more abstract less polished, narrative feel.

Us Ones In Between Show & Book

Print Proof for the "Us Ones In Between" title page

Us Ones In Between Book

Anteism had the pleasure to work with Open Space and the artists of Us Ones in Between to produce a wicked little show catalog. The book is the size of a cd (5"x5") and is 60 pages of full colour artwork along with artist info, foreward by curator Nicholas Robins and an essay by Marlaina Buch.

Excerpt from essay by Marlaina Buch "The basis of relationship between Cameron, Ty, Cody, Caitlin, Erik, Brooke, Eden and Liam is assorted, both personally and artistically. Some of these artists are securely bracketed together: welded through late-night missions, long conversations, law-bending adventures and drawing sessions among friends, roommates, co-workers, lovers and peers, variously. Others fit together more tenuously, orbiting socially, waving from the periphery. Formal similarities come as a kind of psychic bleed or “’dig-able” quality rather than stylistic correspondence. Interpretations of romanticism, psychedelia, graffiti and craft braid into a new generation of artists influenced by the West Coast beat / hippy / lowbrow / funk / folk / street / tattoo art explosion of the 60s and 70s."

Check out the show and book down at Open Space from now until August 1st. We will also have the books available online shortly through the Anteism shop.

Us Ones In Between Opens 8pm Friday, July 3 To August 1 (Artist panel discussion 8pm Tuesday, July 7) Open Space, 510 Fort 250-383-8833 • openspace.ca Us Ones In Between also has it's own website.

Below is a review of the show by local newspaper Monday Magazine.

Fitting in Between

After several years of short-run shows in private spaces (think theMAKE, The Feast and last year’s Abracadabra), fans of Victoria’s vibrant, up-and-coming visual arts scene have the opportunity to see their favourite local artists—folks like Brooke Semple, Liam Hanna-Lloyd and Ty Danylchuk—display their works in a month-long exhibition at Open Space.

“I think it’s what we’ve always wanted, we’ve just never been able to afford it,” says Nicholas Robins, curator of Us Ones In Between. “The great thing about working finally in the capital ‘A’ arts world is there’s funding, so the artists get paid this time. They don’t lose money and we don’t have to charge people at the door to come into our art show. It instantly changes the way it’s going to be experienced.”

Us Ones In Between @ Open Space

us_ones_in_between

An art exhibition curated by Nick Robins. Featuring the work of: Ty Danylchuck, Caitlin Gallupe, Cody Haight, Liam Hannah-Lloyd, Cameron Kidd, Brooke Semple-Haight, Eden Veaudry and Eric Volet.

Us Ones In Between explodes with the activity of eight prolific Victoria artists whose profusion of output appears unlinked to careerist objectives. With bee-like instinct, these artists have produced striking visual cornucopia, while sketching out their place in other art contexts outside of the studio/hive. Working in media ranging from paint, paper and assemblage to crochet and video, Open Space will be filled to the brim with fustian colour. Us Ones In Between is a celebration of a niche community and an examination of art practice in Victoria, today.

Anteism will be publishing a book for the event which will document the artwork of the artists in the exhibition + a foreward by curator Nicholas Robins and essay by Marlaina Buch.

Boxi - Multilayered Stencils - "To Die For"

"BOXI" - Multi Layered Stencil Graffiti

Boxi creates hand cut multi layered life size stencils that he exhibits in galleries and on street walls.

BOXI - To die for

Boxi was born 1974 in Kent, England. He completed his studies at the London St. Martins school of art with a BA Fine Arts degree in painting in 1996. Boxi has lived and worked in Berlin, Germany since 2000.

It is often the arts placement within the installation or urban landscape that completes and defines their action, enabling the work to interact with the space. It is within this collaboration that the material boundaries of the work are dissolved, affecting the perception of the image.

Boxi's latest street stencil, was created in Athens. It is entitled "To die for". "It's an attempt to portray the blind purity of love, and a wall of belief that can end it all. The work is a reflection upon the sad fate of two young lovers who were killed because of their love."

A young couple who tried to elope in one of the most lawless and conservative parts of Afghanistan have been publicly executed by Taliban gunmen after their parents handed them over to be tried by insurgents.

Officials from the south-western province of Nimroz say Gul Pecha, in her late teens, and her boyfriend Abdul Aziz, 21, were shot by a firing squad outside a mosque in their home village of Lokhi on Monday.

The couple had fled to a nearby village and were planning to start a life together without the permission of their parents, according to the province's police chief Abdul Jabar Pardeli.

But they were found by their parents and turned over to the Taliban, who held them for four days in Lokhi's mosque before putting them on trial.

Ghulam Dastageer Azad, the governor of Nimroz, said the couple's execution was "against Islam, against the law and against the constitution".

"To Die For" consists of 11 hand cut life-sized stencils. Each done in a different grayscale shade. To see how the piece was done watch the video below:

Keith Jones @ Hunter & Cook Gallery

Keith Jones at Hunter and Cook Gallery in Toronto, June 5, 2009. Comic extravaganza - and garbage. Camera: Jeremy Bailey  / Editor: Ryan Edwards / Host: Nadja Sayej

Keith Jones makes more garbage than Fisher Price, in a good way. His drawings look like an apocalypse after a nuclear toybox explosion. Gasmasked survivors running around stealing hub caps and rummaging through the crap. Stray animals seem to be less concerned with all the odds and ends than the freak humans. I've noticed Keiths artwork as a timeline to Nobodyland. His earlier work had people driving around in their cars and everything was relatively normal. Then one day, I don't know when, shit hit the fan so to say. And there was garbage eveywhere. In the begining people seemed to get along because they had all the crap they needed around them. As time progresses in Nobodyland human nature rears it's ugly head and the guns come out. I'm not sure what everyone is fighting about, maybe they're clausterphobic? What's the next step after humans blow the shit out of each other? The word on the street is the animals are gaining strength...

Hunter and Cook also publishes a great big art magazine, which is published three times a year. Here's a list of places where you can buy it
